Help the Good News Group and Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley build an Ypsilanti home for a local family  in need of safe, stable and affordable housing!

The Good News Group is a collaboration of 13 area churches that support Habitat through financial contributions and volunteerism since 1997. Habitat estimates each build to cost the organization roughly $70,000 in individual, corporation and congregation funding, and takes roughly 1,500 volunteer hours to complete!

Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley engages our neighbors to build better neighborhoods though volunteer, donation, partnership and ReStore efforts. Habitat builds homes, communities and hope… under one roof.

No construction experience necessary! Habitat will provide all materials, safety gear, tools and a site supervisor – we supply the hands!

Donate

In addition to providing volunteer labor, we want to help offset the cost of materials and supplies for the builds. Our goal for 2024 is to raise $3,000 for Habitat for Humanity. Click the “Donate to Habitat” button below.  Alternatively, checks can be made out to First UMC (please add Habitat for Humanity on the memo line) and mailed to First UMC, 400 E. Grand River Ave, Brighton, MI  48116.

Volunteering

NO BUILDING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED! Most  volunteers have never been involved with building a house and/or landscaping. All that’s needed is your willingness to learn and to help in ways your physical stamina allows. Due to safety regulations, those under the age of 16 are not permitted on site and those 16 and 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

The Good News Group provides an Onsite Coordinator for each congregation, who is responsible for coordinating volunteer efforts with Habitat. Contact April Schauer, amschauer19@gmail.com.

Tasks may include light demolition, framing, insulation, blue board, house wrap, siding, floor repair, wall repair/framing, caulking, trim, cabinets, shelving, fixtures, windows and doors, painting, landscaping and yard.

Lunch Coordinators Needed

If you want to help but cannot commit to a full day, please consider being a lunch coordinator  for one or both dates.  The coordinator (either alone or recruiting a team) plans the menu, obtains the food (by donation or purchase), prepares the lunch, and delivers to the build site and set-up by 11:30am.  The lunch coordinator is encouraged to stay and have lunch with the crew, and then pack up any remaining food prior to departing.
Please contact April Schauer if you are interested in helping as a lunch coordinator.

Volunteers must register with their congregation (see below) and complete Habitat’s liability waiver prior to arriving on site. Due to safety regulations, those under the age of 16 are not permitted on the site, and those 16 and 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

When Registering, Use the Code: FUMC
